Welcome to the Blog
I always found it strange that people wrote blogs. Why do they think they’re so special? My inner monologue would grumble. What could they possibly have to add to the world that hasn’t already been said or done? Why do they think their experience should be shared and people should listen to what they have to say?
I used to feel the same way about songwriters and artists, if I’m being honest. I spent a lot of time projecting my own thoughts and worries onto songwriters and artists who were brave enough to do what I told myself I could never do. I always thought, Their dreams are too lofty, too big. The chances they will actually end up being successful in music is so slim. Why bother trying?
…and yet here I am.
I’ve come a long way from that young girl who was guarded and had no faith in herself as an artist, but that is a blog post for another time. As for my own personal “why,” the answer is simple: I have to. It’s the same feeling as when a TV show is riveting and I just can’t turn it off, or I can’t put down the book after the third time I’ve told myself “one more chapter.” I have to know what happens next, and I can’t rest until I do. I have a longing to forge my own path, a desire to connect with people through the creation of art and all the glories and struggles that come with it. We’re all just trying to do “the next right thing,” as Anna from Frozen would say. This blog is my next have to, my next right thing.
The idea of this blog was born a few years ago from a few grievances I have with the current state of being an independent artist. The first is that short-form content has oversaturated the market of music-making and sometimes it feels like posting a TikTok is like shouting into the void. The second is that while short form content is fairly quick and easy to record and upload, it can often lack true depth and connection. I often see artists, independent and world-renowned alike, posting that they’re releasing a song or posting what they’ve written with little to no details about the process behind writing the song.
My personal feelings toward these three points are assuaged by this blog. I want to create something I’d want to consume as someone who loves music and is interested in learning as much as possible about all facets of an artist’s process. I have no interest in an algorithmic get-rich-quick scheme, though I understand my best chance at getting my music to others right now is through social media and certainly don’t resent my fellow artists for their content work. This blog just means that in addition to recording videos to take you behind the scenes of my work as an independent artist, I can also spend time writing a blog piece that will be more in-depth and specific than the short-form video content I post.
I want to take you with me as I find out what it takes to be an independent artist, and I want you to see as much as possible. You’ll see everything from the artistry of songwriting itself to the obligatory “content grind” to the difficult internal battles and mental struggles that come with being in charge of every facet of the process all the time. I want to talk lyrics and inspiration, content and logistics, mental roadblocks and good support systems, and everything else that will inevitably pop up along the way. And you’re invited along for the ride.
So…are you in?
